Every country covered on this site, the 2–4 apps that genuinely have users there, the messaging app conversations move to once a match happens, and one honest note per country — not a marketing list of every app that has ever launched in that market.
App-store rankings move every month, and one man’s experience in one neighborhood is not a market. This table is built from three things: each app’s own feature and help pages where they publish one, live app-store category rankings (Similarweb, checked per country), and, where a city has it, the popular_dating_apps field in this site’s own city database. Where the database has something the hand-built table below doesn’t, it’s folded in rather than dropped — see the note under each region’s table.

Paid vs. free tiers, honestly
Every mainstream app in this table works on a free tier: a working profile, matching and a capped number of likes or swipes per day. What the paid tiers actually buy is time and reach, not better matches:
- Unlimited likes / swipes — the baseline paid feature on Tinder, Bumble and Hinge; on a free account you hit a daily cap fast in any market with a decent-sized pool.
- See who liked you — Tinder Gold and above, Bumble Premium; skips the swiping queue for people who already liked your profile.
- Location change (Tinder Passport, Bumble Travel Mode) — the feature most relevant to travel: sets your visible location to a destination city before you arrive. Tinder includes Passport starting with its lowest paid tier, Plus, and carries it through Gold and Platinum, per Tinder’s own subscription-tiers page. Bumble’s equivalent, Travel Mode, requires Premium or Premium+, per Bumble’s own help pages, and runs for 7 days per destination before it needs renewing. Neither Hinge nor most local/niche apps in this table (Amanda, ThaiFriendly, the Cupid Media brands) offer a comparable feature — see the Tinder Passport guide for the full mechanics.
- Niche and paid-only apps — the Cupid Media brands (ColombianCupid, BrazilCupid, FilipinoCupid, LatinAmericanCupid) gate messaging behind a paid membership from the start rather than offering a genuinely usable free tier; treat the paywall as a filter on casual browsers, not a guarantee against fake profiles.
Verification and safety features
The three biggest apps in this table each run some form of photo verification — a short selfie video compared against your profile photos to confirm a live match — and display a badge on a verified profile. Tinder and Bumble both also offer optional government-ID verification on top of photo verification in some markets; Hinge’s verification is photo/selfie matching only, with no ID-based option at any tier. A verified badge confirms the photos are of a real, matching face — it does not confirm the person’s identity, age, marital status or intentions, and it is not a substitute for meeting in a public place and video-calling before you travel to meet someone.
The app-lure pattern
A specific scam pattern shows up repeatedly in the countries on this list: a match on a dating app moves the conversation to WhatsApp or LINE, pushes to meet fast, and the meeting is used to set up a robbery, a drink-spiking, or a long-running “pig-butchering” investment scam that starts with romance and ends with a crypto-platform request for money. FAQ
Is Tinder the biggest dating app everywhere on this list?
No. It's the largest or a close second in most of these 28 countries, but Badoo outranks or rivals it in Brazil, Poland and across much of the Balkans, and Facebook Dating carries unusual weight in the Philippines because of how dominant Facebook itself is there. Bumble has overtaken Tinder in some app-store rankings in specific countries at different points — check current rankings rather than assuming one app always wins.
Why does the messaging app matter more than the dating app?
Because that's where the relationship actually happens. A dating app is a discovery layer; almost every conversation that goes anywhere moves within a few messages to WhatsApp, LINE, KakaoTalk, Viber or Telegram depending on the country, and that's also where most reported dating-app scams — including pig-butchering and app-lure setups — try to move the conversation to get you off a platform with reporting tools.
Are the Cupid Media sites (ColombianCupid, BrazilCupid, FilipinoCupid) legitimate?
They're a real, long-running company — Cupid Media has operated dozens of niche, nationality-focused paid dating sites for over 20 years and is still active. "Legitimate" doesn't mean scam-free: any paid, message-gated site attracts a higher share of fake or catfish profiles than a mainstream free app, because the paywall filters out casual browsers but not fraud. Treat them the same way you'd treat any dating platform — verify a match on a video call before sending money or personal financial information to anyone you haven't met.
Do I need a local phone number to use these apps?
Not for the dating apps themselves, which generally accept your home-country number or email. You will usually need a local SIM once you're in-country, though, because that's what most matches will expect for WhatsApp, LINE or a local wallet app, and because a foreign number is itself a small signal to some matches that you just arrived.
What are the free vs. paid tiers actually worth?
The free tier gets you a working profile and a limited number of likes or swipes on every app in this table. Paid tiers mainly buy back time — unlimited likes, seeing who liked you, and features like Tinder Passport or Bumble Travel Mode that let you set your profile to a destination city before you arrive.
