How we rank cities
Each city carries four editorial scores on a 1 to 10 scale, compiled from public cost of living data, government travel advisories and community reports. For this list we weight them: dating scene 50%, safety 30%, English proficiency 10%, affordability 10%. Affordability converts the monthly budget to a score where about $500 a month is a 10 and $2,000 or more is a 3.
The result favors cities where meeting people is genuinely easy and you can live well without a large budget. It penalizes places that are wonderful but expensive or hard to navigate without the language. Nothing here is sponsored; see the full method.
Four rules that hold everywhere on this list
- Learn the basics of the language. Even greetings and numbers change how you are received, and in most of these cities English alone limits you to the tourist bubble.
- Read the cultural notes before you land. Who pays, how fast things move and how involved family is differ enormously between, say, Manila and Prague.
- Be honest about what you are looking for. Every one of these dating cultures has a word for the man who is not.
- Treat safety scores as a floor, not a promise. Meet in public first, watch your drink, and read the city page's safety section for the scams that actually get reported.
